Rheumatic diseases are painful conditions caused by swelling or inflammation in the muscles, joints, ligaments or tendons.

While some rheumatic diseases can be the result of the wear on joints with age, others such as rheumatoid arthritis occur when the immune system becomes hyperactive, causing the body to attack its connective tissues.
